Social Media has already become the communication
Tool of choice for friends, but face to face contact is still best

Its no surprise, perhaps, that social media sites have become popular as a means of communicating with friends. After all, that is what it is there to do!. Nonetheless, the speed in which social media sites have replaced methods which only a few years ago were, in their own right, seen as new and radical ways to communicate, is impressive. Texting quickly started to replace phone calls. But now texting and emails have been surplanted themselves by facebook and other social media sites. In a survey run by Redshift Research with Crowdology, the average time spent talking to friends on the phone was 2.2 hours a week. This compared with 2.4 for sending texts to friends, and 2.5 via email. But on average people spent 2.6 hours a week communicating via social media sites, but another 2.4 hours also seeing what friends are up to by looking at social media sites. There is one very old fashioned means of communicating with friends, however, which cannot be beaten - face to face contact! On average people spent 3.9 hours a week meeting friends face to face - that’s 50% more time than they spend communicating via facebook and other social media sites.
But if you include the time people spend communicating on social media sites as well checking to see what friends are up to, people spend more time communicating online than they do face to face (5 hours per week versus 3.9 hours per week).
Of course, the amount of time people spend with friends varies by age group. The 18-24 age bracket spend more time than any other group (25 hours a week), while the 55+ age group spend 9 hours a week. While 18-24 year olds spend an average of 4.9 hours a week on social media communicating with friends, people over 55 spend little over 30 mins a week on social media sites.
18 - 24 year olds spend the equivalent of 11.5 full days a year communicating with friends on facebook or other social media sites
